Their extremely sensitive hearing can be turned into a weakness, as Regan discovered that their ears are so delicate that high-frequency sound waves (generated from a hearing aid) will make them uncontrollably squeal in pain and spasm, accidentally opening up the armor plates on their ears and exposing the vulnerable skin underneath. The delicate ears underneath the armor are vulnerable to conventional weapons, explaining why they only briefly lift their plates if they feel they are safe and tracking an enemy or prey. The entire head is actually composed of multiple sections of armor plates that can be held open if they want to listen more closely for prey - unfolding like a hellish cabbage. With no apparent nose, it is unclear if they possess a sense of smell, or if this is perhaps achieved through sense organs in the mouth. Their head features a large jaw filled with sharp teeth and no eyes. Their claws can kill victims instantly as their claws can seriously injure victims. Due to their claws and great strength, they are very adept at climbing on walls. Their body posture vaguely resembles a cross between a gorilla and a flightless bat: all four of their limbs are digitigrade, walking on their knuckles, with arms drastically larger than their legs - resulting in them usually running on all four limbs but capable of rearing up to attack or jump large distances. The creatures are slightly taller than a human, with overall proportions that are lithe and lean. Due to the tradeoffs of these features, however, they are completely blind - and their dense armor and musculature is so heavy that they cannot swim in water. Their armor is so tough it can resist all conventional human weaponry, from small arms to missiles even fire. This pushed their evolution to develop features such as relying on echolocation instead of sight, possessing impenetrably hard armor, and greater strength in Earth's gravity. In one of the most intense and harrowing scenes of the movie, Evelyn is not only able to protect herself, but also successfully give birth to her child, with monsters roaming her house.According to John Krasinski, the director of the movies, the creatures originated on a lightless planet in a faraway galaxy, a hell world with much harsher conditions and higher gravity than Earth. In a world where noise can literally cause your death, Evelyn goes into labour, with the presence one of the monsters in her house. The physical and emotional depths that the character has to go through, to protect her family, and new-born baby, is astounding. The true hero of A Quiet Place, in the sense of a character showing true heroics, has to be Blunt’s Evelyn.

The movie is more about love, and loss and holding on to the ones you love, by any means necessary. Or about characters that showcase bravery in the face of chilling death. Ultimately, the takeaway from A Quiet Place isn’t about the world becoming a better place. I can’t think of a ‘horror’ movie in recent times that featured such character building that a death scene was that emotionally gut wrenching and tear inducing. This act brought to end a plot point from earlier where the two experienced tension in their relationship due to a mistake by Regan that resulted in the death of their youngest son. But that scene is crucial to showcase the sense of normalcy that two parents are trying to provide.Įven the third act, showcases a great moment between Lee and his estranged daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) when his last words (or signs) to her, were him saying he loved her. The mother, Evelyn, (Emily Blunt) is shown as doing homework with their young son Marcus (Noah Jupe) in a world where it doesn’t make much sense to learn about division. Even the main conflict is less about the monsters and their motives, and more about the Abbot family, fighting to live, and hold on to whatever moments of normalcy they scrape together.
